Teaching recess - What do you like to do?
Target Group:
Pre-Intermediate Level
Material:
Recess flashcards and adverbs of frequency flashcards
Vocabulary:
bully kids, catch insects, do handstands, do somersaults, fight, hang out, play catch, play hide-and-go-seek, play leapfrog, play sports, play tag, race, show off, talk to friends, tease girls, tell jokes, tell secrets, walk around
Process:
Introduce recess vocabulary to students and ask random questions: What do you do in break time? Have you ever bullied kids? Do you like to tease girls? e.g.. Use pre-learned vocabulary. Add adverbs of frequencies to your questions, so later students have to tell their own stories from their last break time, what they do like to do, and what they don’t like to do, by using adverbs. For more advanced levels you can also add time vocabulary to your questions.
Skills:
Recess vocabulary; spelling; word-picture association; word-picture recognition; sentence structure; reading; conjunctions; asking questions; telling time; free time; daily schedules; adverbs of frequency
Game Idea:
True or False Chairs - Put 2 chairs in front of the whiteboard. Write above one chair- TRUE- the other one –FALSE-. Show a flashcard (quickly) and shout out a vocabulary word. If that flashcard matches the vocabulary word, the students must try to sit on the TRUE chair. First to get to the correct chair gets point.-Hint: have the rest of the team read the vocabulary word again and say if it was true or false (VERY active game).
