Teaching instructions vocabulary to younger learners
Target Group:
Beginner Level
Material:
Instruction flashcards and some verb flashcards
Vocabulary:
be quiet, close your books, come here, please come in, please go out, hand in, hand out, lay down, look at the board, open your books, pick up, put away, sit down, stand up, take out
Process:
Introduce instruction vocabulary to students first. Let students match and pair the instruction cards on the board such as stand up – sit down, take out – put away, pick up – lay down. You also can write the vocabulary on the board and the students have to stick the correct flashcards above the writing. An additional exercise is to erase letters from the writing where students have to rewrite the letters into the free space onto the board.
Skills:
Instructions vocabulary; grammar; sentence structure; word-picture association; word-picture recognition; early reading; classroom behaviour; conjunctions
Game Idea:
Follow me - Give classroom commands. Students have to follow such as stand up, sit down, go out, come in e.g.. The slowest student following the action has to sit down. Last student standing is the winner.
